The leaders sell the fake idea of the fairly land so that the people give them the support needed to stage a coup and take over and once the leaders get what they wanted all along, complete power, they treat those who supported them like the lowly scum plebs that the elites always thought.
Even worse, they purge them first because the last thing they want is ideological militant fools who're now upset they were sold a basket full of lies at their doorstep. As the poem goes, "First they came for the Socialists..."
That poem is why we need to defend our neighbors and communities when they come. We're totally finished if everyone just hunkers down hoping that their neighbors were the last ones the US Stasi is going to come for.
