I had a a judge try this with me 4-5 years ago. i was giving a hypothetical, and said "let's say he went to the store."
Judge: You mean "they."
I paused. It was a hypothetical. i then said, "it's hypothetical."
Judge: We only use gender neutral pronouns.
Me: This is interrupting my train of thought, and my argument. I cannot effectively argue when my words are being handcuffed. And, in my scenario, the person is a he - because I made him.
Force the judge to censure you for "wrong think". Laugh your way to the disciplinary committee.

Is not ‘they’ plural?
indeed. I would have countered with " I only use grammatically correct pronouns in this court."
