I think its a bit deeper than "what will the neighbors think?" We're not talking tall grass & oil stains on the driveway.
The consequences may not affect the dead man... but what of his wife & kids? His mom & dad? You think they won't be ostracized from society just the same? School? Banks? Community centers? Any friends or family of whoever takes that first step is going to feel the aftershocks first, and the hardest. So its not just "what will the neighbors think?" Its more like, "what pain will be inflicted on everyone I know?"
Not to mention how that would trigger so much more tyranny on this side of the political spectrum. But its a rock & hard place aint it? Damned if we do, dammed if we dont.
The Founding Fathers had yknow... a small army to back 'em up. It ain't like George Washington just packed up his musket & started blasting up in government offices lol

You just found a reason to justify your cowardice. The founding fathers faced even worse than you did. They don't make 'em like they used to.

If the Continental Army gave them the bravery to sign those documents, then how come they kept the signers a secret for close to a year afterwards?
