Honestly I'm not sure why we switched from colored to black. I grew up saying colored and the switch seemed weird then. African Americans aren't even black in color.

In South Africa, they mean (or meant) different things. "Colored" meant people from India, or mixed-race persons, and were treated differently than Blacks. (vague memories from watching "Gandhi" thirty years ago. He referred to himself as "colored" while practising law in ZA.)
