I think a lot of people are neglecting to consider the level of power the government had as well. There were no video cameras, no facial recognition, no automatic lookups, no phone tracking data, and money was entirely cash. If we picked a fight with England, it would take them a month to get a fleet of ships over.

Compare to now. Patriots who literally only walked into the capitol building at the wrong time are being listed as terrorists and from that are losing their jobs, getting put on no-fly lists, getting arrested, banned off social media, etc. If any honest insurrection started, they could call in an air strike to level the place in minutes.

Our biggest mistake was letting them infringe on 2A (or maybe letting USA have a standing army which could be turned against the citizens). I should be able to own an M1 Abrams. In an ideal world, I should be able to gang up with my buddies and take on the fed. Sadly, that's not where the power dynamic sits.
