They did politely protest. They did consult with Parliament. They sent representatives to England in an effort to resolve their differences with the government. They spent years on an effort to stay under the governance of the Crown.

Only after they had exhausted every remedy they had, did they turn to fighting, and then, it was only after they had been fired upon.

History. Read and learn.

To be fair, they actually did all of those things. They took every measure to avoid violent conflict, but were left with no reasonable alternative.

What's interesting is how history seems to repeat itself.
