A third party, even if it fails in 2024, would peel away so many voters from the Republican party that we can use it to leverage reform. The Patriot Party would achieve its aims even if it loses.
Why form another party when you can take one over. Reforming the GOP makes far more sense. A third party would simply have Dems and GOP teaming up to attack it. Dems would be more frightened if the GOP was reformed than they would be if a third party were started. Reforming the GOP is an easier, more achievable target.
I get what you're saying. To counter-point, in the eyes of independent voters (which outnumber of registered Republicans and registered Democrats), there's a lot of baggage associated with the Republican party (and the Democrat party, as well). The creation of a third party creates a lot of additional work but also eliminates the baggage. This could be useful for attracting a broad base of support. Dems and GOP beating down the Patriot Party would play poorly in the eyes of voters who hate both parties equally, and offer a stable political home to those who feel disenfranchised by the uniparty dynamic.

Achieve it's aims by giving democrats a permanent super majority? No thanks.
Note: the uniparty already has a permanent supermajority
It would force the Republicans to actually give a fuck about populist interests instead of constantly fighting against their own base.
