Because it was free and they made things easy. Everything you sign up for uses their email address. If they take it away, you are screwed.

I'm correcting this mistake asap.

I'm not free of Google products (yet) but their search engine is by far the easiest to rid yourself of without any negative impact.

Yeah. Unfortunately for work I need an Android or iOS phone. Not sure if either is better than the other.

Not really. Android is an open source project as well. And can be 100% de-googled.
