I have a family member who has become wrapped up in a gender identity and it is 100% a mental illness connected to depression, sexual disfuction, and low self esteem.

She had a nasty unwanted divorce, she got left by her cunt husband (trust me, he is) and now magically she is no longer female and has victimhood to comfort her in her time of need rather than a healthy coping mechanism of some kind.
