A lot of atheists still "need" that hole filled that is ordinarily occupied by religion.
They instead fill it with hedonism, or their ideology, or the State.
I think there's very few of us "true" atheists, as being an atheist requires a certain degree of nihilism. For example, look at how many people on the left obsess over the value of human life (abortion notwithstanding). If you're religious then you recognize the value of the Divine Spark of human sapience. You believe in the soul and that that's something that provides the value.
If you're an atheist though, it would make no sense to actually believe any human has inherent value. Emotions are shitty electrochemical reactions and nothing more. You're a machine of meat and bone. Proteins performing a nanoscopic dance following rigid instructions that create an automaton that looks human, but is easily recreated and exists in surplus, and thus holds low value.
So when someone religious says "people are suffering", it's because they believe they are preserving a divine order of a higher power.
But when an atheist says "people are suffering", where is the concern coming from? You aren't preserving anything. Emotions are not real. Feelings are not real. Objectively there literally is no value to 98% of human life. There are zero homeless people who will provide any value to society even if we uplift them.
The problem is many atheists are religious, but we're told to hate religion, so they're completely at odds in their own mind.
To many leftests science is a religion, and like a religion cannot be questioned in any meaningful way.
i thought they were atheist though
