If I was Trump's lawyer, I would first point out that if it's constitutional to impeach a private citizen because the articles were drafted while he was still president, why isn't the supreme court chief justice presiding for the impeachment. The second point I would make would be to point out if he was guilty by any reasonable measure, you would be trying him in federal court instead of this kangaroo court. And the rest of my defense would just be pointing out all the Dems guilty of the very thing they are trying to impeach trump over. That would be my ENTIRE defense.
Hopefully Trump supporters are smart enough to keep their mouths shut when that happens. We just need one to pass for a neutral juror and DJT has nothing to worry about in a real court.
Congress isn't a court of law. There are no criminal trials. They can only invite people in to speak at their hearings, which they do all the time. Impeachments have nothing to do with being a criminal trial.
I'm a little amused watching the shit show, government just making themselves more and more irrelevant by the day.

Sadly, criminal and civil court is next. There is no limit to their hatred and fear.

It's still a trial though. "the Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments"
