They are just at best completely separate things being lumped under the "muh covid" umbrella to make people think there's no hope of ever getting out of lockdown. And what if there are? We need to get past this idea that "more aggressive/easier to infect" = "you WILL catch it and die". More infectious does not mean it's more dangerous. Most mutations are crippling for the virus. They can infect easier but do less damage. We WANT more infections, because that leads to recovery and immunity.
