They tried arguing their side, and were handed their asses by logic, reason, and fact, for years and years. So now they just disregard anything that doesn't benefit them.
If you've ever dealt with an actual narcissist in the real world, you know this intimately. You can prove your point until you're blue in the face, and they'll just go "whatever, I still say I'm right." And you hit the wall eventually and just stop trying - which is what the narc wants. You can't win against a narc.
