I think it's more that Trump running again locks him out of a run. Mittens still wants to be President.
Mittens and his niece have a real problem now, Trump is gonna be supporting MAGA candidates the next two years - while I think he should tell the GOP to suck all the bags of dicks, he can undermine Mittens and McDaniels and force them to back MAGA and not GOP. And with Trump potentially in the running for '24, Mittens has no chance. Voting to block Trump from office again makes sense for the corrupt world of Mitt Romney.
Romney already knew that he was done, this is his way of throwing up a middle finger on his way out even though he's in there until 2024.

If Romney were the RNC nominee for potus I would vote for a democrat for the first time in my life
Romney being on the ticket wouldn't be enough to make me vote for Biden (or worse, Kamala). I would probably just write-in Trump (or maybe Tulsi).
