I am British so unclear on the laws of an American citizen but am I right in thinking that anything the MSM publish about Trump that is found to be false does it give him the right to sue these SOB'S or does he not have same protections as he is former prez?

Under US law, Trump is a Public Figure, and therefore, to prove liability for defamation, he would have to show "actual malice." Under US law, "actual malice" is an unreachable goal. That is because any ol' unreasonable opinion fails to qualify as "actual malice."

Every now and then, the US Supreme Court issues a really stupid opinion. In this case, it was Times v. Sullivan.
