I write to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. van der Veen and Mr. Castor for their heroic defense of President Trump and the 75 million Americans who support him. The Capitol riot was a disgraceful act that no one condones, but it is equally disgraceful that it is being used by politicians of both parties as a bludgeon against their political enemies. The unconstitutional impeachment trial of a private citizen had been a centerpiece of this attack.
Despite the appalling lack of due process, the defense was focused and effective, driving home all of the key points that needed to be made and exposing the fatal weaknesses of the House's case.
One of the saddest things about the post-election period is that so many attorneys felt the need to abandon President Trump because of professional pressures and even personal safety. I was horrified to read that Mr. van der Veen's property had been vandalized because of his participation in the impeachment trial and I hope there are no further incidents of this nature. Attorneys serve the public interest, regardless of which side they represent in a given proceeding, and attempts to intimidate them are unacceptable.
Thank you, Mr. van der Veen. Thank you, Mr. Castor. You, your colleagues and your families should be extremely proud of your work in this historic trial. Your advocacy not only served President Trump, it gave voice to millions of Americans like myself who are currently being shunned and "cancelled" because of our politics. That voice was clear and unwavering. We abhor violence just as we treasure our American birthright of free speech, fairness and due process of law.
