As a top priority, Americans need to fight for School Choice. The US Department of Education is a total failure. They have replaced education with indoctrination. No matter who we support, they must be willing to push for School Choice to create alternatives for parents and put some competition into the education business. We must close the US Department of Education and fight for School Choice. This is fundamental to saving America.

Every politically controlled educational system will inculcate the doctrine of state supremacy sooner or later, whether as the divine right of kings, or the “will of the people” in “democracy.” Once that doctrine has been accepted, it becomes an almost superhuman task to break the stranglehold of the political power over the life of the citizen. It has had his body, property, and mind in its clutches from infancy. An octopus would sooner release its prey

We should make education more about education rather than glorified baby sitting.

That would require with proper home life tactics, with a two parent controlled environment, which we see how well that's working.

I will for sure give the man props, as he has made statements in the past that truly shine's light on subject matters, but I mean come on, the United States Educational system has proven itself to be a failing enterprise, for 40 plus years, and not because the Government controls it, it's because they allowed unionize troll's to use it for profit gain for themselves at the expense of educational priorites and lack of educating our children. I went to public school's in the 1966 to 1979 era, and I can say that after that time, is when the union's started destroying the educational foundations. The saying it's for the kids every school levy agenda, is where it goes to hell. 80% of passed school levies, in every community in this country, that pass's at vote, goes into the pockets of the unionized public school teachers. That leaves a mere 20% for the actual students and school. That's fact folks, look it up. Why do you think they hate private schools so much, 1 reason, is the students get a better education, and 2 they are losing money to competitiors.

Funny. I don't remember reading anywhere in the constitution where it gave the federal government any right whatsoever to force it's way into the education system.

I agree completely but its a losing argument. We just need to hammer school choice, that's how you break up the teacher's union cabal and also make inroads with urban voters.

The reality is that w/o federal dollars most of your terrible schools wouldn't be anywhere close to financially solvent. We either push vouchers (school choice) or we push federal magnet schools (non co-ed, trade, military, entrepreneurial). I prefer vouchers or best yet a combination of both.

Ummmm....WAS one of the smartest men in the world.

The LATE Dr. Thomas Sowell now sleeps in the grave, resting from fighting the good fight.

His works continue to follow after him, educating those who will listen and heed the wisdom he learned and imparts.

He is alive. Why do you think he died?

I wonder if you are thinking of his good friend and equally intelligent colleague Dr. Walter Williams. He WAS an amazing person as well. It seems easy for people to confuse them since they are/were both amazing contemporary thinkers of about the same age and associated with the Stanford's Hoover institute. Amazing Americans.

I think I am.

From a tip by another commenter, I looked up Thomas Sowell's current biography. Thomas Sowell, the economist, is indeed very much alive.

Thanks, all, for the correction.
