The senate will need 60 votes in order to get this passed. Which isn't going to happen. There are a couple of Democrat Senators that have come out against this kind of thing. Like the Dem Senator from WV. So they're already down 1-2. So at best, they're going to have 48-52. And you can't pass this with a simple majority. You need to pass through the filibuster which requires 60 votes and I just don't see that happening.
Biden can urge and order all day long, but the simple fact is, there's no support for this shit.
And you can't get rid of the filibuster as there are also a couple of Senators that are democrats who have said they're not open to debate because they want to keep it.
So that really fucks any kind of super crazy bill they want to cram through. Unless they can come up with 10 Republican Senators that are willing to kill the filibuster and pass these gun laws (They'd actually need 12 Republicans since there are two Democrat Senators that aren't open to banning guns/filibuster) it's just not going to happen.
Biden has to know this so I get the feeling he's just getting his sound bites out there to say that he tried to keep to his promises about banning guns but it's not in his wheelhouse.
They need something to prompt Senators to vote in favor of it. So there would need to be a mass killing that racks up some decent body count to cause the Republican Senators to get upset so they vote with emotion. Kinda like how the Patriot Act was passed. They need something like that. And it needs to be with assault rifles. Which, I don't think they CAUSE these things to happen, but they certainly capitalize on tragedy, that's for sure.
