As a history buff, there are two criteria that precedes civil wars. Particularly for communist take overs like the Soviet Union, China, Nicaragua, you name them... even one of the US civil wars: Revolutionary War [which was a civil war, the colonists were British citizens].

The spark that sets off a civil war after the two conditions are met is the military is ordered to, and fires on its own citizens.
