My understanding is this:
- A bunch of people went to protest in DC.
- The police defense of the capitol was weak and they pretty much let people into the capital, waving them in even.
- People entered the capitol building as if it were a museum attraction. For the most part it was largely peaceful with people even taking selfies with police officers. - There was some violence, pushing and shoving and guys yelling at each other but a far cry from anything that happened at the Portland riots.
- Some police officer lost his eye apparently? Sucks but kids lose their eye playing with sticks and stones... it happens. Sad but pretty minor
- A woman gets shot by a private security guy. All the woman was doing was breaking a window. She was standing next to a police officer so she thought what she was doing was fine and wasn't going to get her killed
- Politicians pretended like their life was in danger and overreacted. Meanwhile most guys were just taking selfies sitting in people's offices and posting on instagram.
- Potentially people were chanting "hang Pence" so presumably they were all going to hang the politicians or something.
Anyway, did I cover it? Seems like a mostly peaceful protest tbh and not a big deal. What's the big deal? I don't get it.
All those dots seemed reasonable. There's some other that boggle.
Trump offered extra security (Nat Guard). Nancy and military both denied it.
People entering (some places/routes) had doors unlooked and opened from the inside.
Some lefties were streaming from the "started inside before that" point of views, which was odd.
Several of the key individuals have pretty non-MAGA ties.
Some of the politicals (AOC) pretending they were in fear weren't even in DC that day.
The "museum tour"/ "violent part" that they claim Trump's speech kicked off was in progress before Trump's speech even ended. (Tough to incite people that didn't hear you.)
The NYT ran a story about a policeman killed by a fire extinguisher ... they retracted key bits of that today (IIRC).
The tl;dr is: It's a big deal because the press did their usual lying liar act. With malice aforethought.
