Sand only works if it created enough friction from heavy travel. I wouldn't trust sand with my car for a New York second.

It might have a little positive effect AFTER the precipitation stops and temperatures have risen past freezing.

A sand-salt mix is probably best but sand is used all the time around here in rural Illinois over icy roads to help create traction.

We usually put kitty litter down on walkways to help keep people from slipping.

Both were suggested due to lack of proper ice melt.
