You can carry a pistol (outside of your car) without a permit as long as it is not loaded...for transport purposes. Which leaves a LOT of wiggle room for carrying.

In many jurisdictions, even a misdemeanor punishable by more than 1 year in jail counts the same as a felony in stripping your right to self-defense.
