When I was complaining about the exodus of communists from California to Texas, she said "Won't they just vote for the same things they are fleeing?"

The same thing they are fleeing. Yep. Just like all immigrants. The crap they think they're fleeing they bring with them.

My parents came from Chyna and they were the ones that put my foot through the door in becoming a big Trump fan.

It’s just the stupid ones, which the left love, or their brainwashed children growing up here. Any immigrant fleeing communism or terrible oppression with half a brain sees how their country got to that point.

My family is almost entirely first generation immigrants and it’s unfortunately a mixed bag. It’s not like they were poor back home. They were quite privileged (particularly since the class systems in 3rd world countries are crazy) and were able to come over legally because of it. Ultimately what it seems to boil down to is whether they’re more likely to fall into victim mentality and blame others for their misfortune or choose to put in the hard work to succeed.

Sure they flee communism, socialism, oppression. But, not to cast aspersions on your family, I had a conversation with a work-friend from Ghana one day, and we got into this territory a bit. I was talking about how some immigrant groups where I live think it's fine to use bribery of, say, our esteemed Mayor. And he's happy to take their bribes, and it upsets me. And she explained to me that, where they come from, using any possible influence may make the difference between your children eating or not! So I got her point, but it still upsets me. Bringing the old ways to a new land-- not so great. Leave them back there.

And that’s fair. I wouldn’t want anyone bringing that back here and didn’t really account for an experience beyond my family’s (oops!). If you come here, you have to play by our rules. You have to adapt to our culture to some degree, too.

But it does illustrate that there are people who don’t necessarily see what led to their country going down a bad path.

My example of my family was meant more to show that a law abiding immigrant family with integrity can still have people who (although they should know better) fall prey to the left but I failed to (i) include important assumptions about my family and (ii) account for the fact that there is indeed a lot of bad behavior and corruption beyond what my family had to deal with back home (part of the privileged bit - they never had to worry about feeding their children).

I understand. I'm sorry if I disturbed you by lumping all immigrants together. Sounds like you came from a good family.
