Most people fleeing a place understand what they’re fleeing, at least. Whether they understand how they got there is a different matter but treating them as the “other” and mirroring the attitude of the leftist place they left when they come to your area is only going to make them feel like this new area needs to change.
Don’t be part of the problem. Be welcoming and give them the benefit of the doubt. You may be showing them the error of their ways. If you don’t, it’ll just confirm their own views of the intolerant conservative (generally misguided but maybe not in the case of you and your girlfriend)
