I don't think it's fair to say that lyrical content and vocal performance in a song (even if not necessarily "singing" in the traditional/technical sense) don't matter at all. If so, how is Louis Armstrong, Lou Reed, David Bowie, David Lee Roth, Joey Ramone, Dean Martin, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Johnny Rotten, John Lee Hooker, Janis Joplin, Screamin Jay Hawkins, Michael Jackson and so many others considered musical legends or greats? Because of their vocal performances/front man presence not necessarily their singing prowess (or in some cases even skill). Sgt. Barry Sadler would object for example (Ballad of the Green Beret), that's basically someone reading a poem over a simple musical track/drum beat.... and it's a great song IMO.
On the lyrical side, there are many songs and groups that would otherwise suck or at least not be considered nearly as good if you change the lyrics to something more banal. A lot of Neil Young's stuff for example. On the flip side to that, music like Robert Palmer (and to a lesser extent Dire Straits or Huey Lewis) is good precisely because it is more simple lyrically.
