What McConnell did was, McDaniel was running as Tea Party, and he was going to win, so McConnell and his NRSC buddies (which Cruz later became a part of) got together with the Democrats to start calling McDaniel a racist. Conservatives fell for the ruse hook, line, and sinker, and they voted for Cochran instead.
