I always liked mini 14s but the parts and maintenance are just not viable for 'in the field' use. But still i want one. I almost bought one with a beautiful wood stock with striated patterns

You should of bought it. They are impossible to find without papers now..
I bought a para ordnance 1911 instead and customized it. Sold it too. I fell on hard times. It was BEAUTIFUL
