Everyone laughed when my family moved to PA and installed Wood and/or Coal stoves throughout the house...
And they were only right the time I woke up at 2 AM to discover that my sister never let the cat inside during the blizzard, my brother never refilled the wood at 10 like he was supposed to, the house was frigid, and I had to go out in the driving snow in my boxers to dig through the drift on the porch and get a new fire going. Built that cat a little Couch Cushion Igloo facing the stove in the livingroom, and gave him some heated up chicken while he and I waited to stop dying of cold.
He did. Was a tough bastard. He'd go off into the hills for days, eventually come back with a missing tooth, or some new scars, and let everyone baby him for a while. Eventually he'd want to go out again, and wander away to hunt for a time. And then he'd come back. And in the end, he came home, old and entirely toothless, to retire and eat blender food for his last days.

But other than that, who's laughing NOW?!
Thank God that kitty survived!
