Solar panels and a battery bank are one of the best friends of an off-gridder/prepper. Screw the solar fields controlled by corporations, get a few thousand watts of solar panels and rake the snow off those bitches. They still work at like 15% efficiency even in heavy cloud coverage. Get a nice lithium battery bank and your reserves will pull you through the cloudy snow days. You legit can run a heater on solar if you have enough panels and batteries, and then you literally don't need anyone for anything and you don't need gas for your chainsaw to cut down trees for your stove and/or worry about running out of trees if you they're limited on your land. Plus you don't have to do any work, just sit there and let the free energy beam in from the heavens. It worked for me on my campervan. I wasn't running heat off it but I ran all my electronics and fridge/freezer off it with no issues at all, I was out in the forest for months and my batteries were always topped off during the day.
