As we enter our second night without power, I’m thankful my family has a generator to keep this home heated. So many people do not. The dark winter upon us should not be. Pray for our poor and elderly and for the ill prepared here in Texas and throughout this nation.

I hate when libs are like "it's the HOTTEST summer in record! This is BAD!", as if the earth isn't billions of years old, and we don't just have temperature data for a couple of centuries, three TOPS.

How can any of us know that the way our earth changes isn't natural when we have less than 0.00000000001% of its history?

Earthquakes, hurricane's, tornado's, wildfires etc... are also due to global F'ing warming.

And their solution to all of those are the exact same: more government control.

Tell her to leave her water on, just enough to let the water trickle out and open up the cabinet doors if the pipes are on an outside wall! Source : consumer reports

Oh so when pipes freeze in Texas, you mean the actual pipes to your house. Dayum.

9
MAGAsJustBegun 9 points ago +9 / -0

Thanks for the tip! I actually did tell her that! I've dealt with frozen pipes a few times, as I'm in the terrible state of NY. I've used heat guns to get them going again a couple of times too.

I am sorry you have the chill issues, but you got me to laugh. The idea of doing what is logical and being seen as absurd.

That’s how you get frozen pipes.

I have a 15month old baby. We’ve been without power since 6:00am Monday. Please pray

22
BigIgloo 22 points ago +22 / -0

I'm in the same boat, but the power company thinks I have power. I only have 110v, so my stove, water heater, and electric HVAC are dead. Since Sunday night.

I can't get anyone on the phone to tell them what's going on. It's not a rolling blackout, it's something broken either along the way to my house or at my house.

HVAC guy said to tell them I have no 220v at my electrical box, but I can't get through to a human to literally save my life.

We're all huddled in the baby's room with a tiny inefficient space heater. Rest of the house is 🥶

5
looneycooney 5 points ago +6 / -1

So to be clear what is your panel rated at? If you have power to some of the house the whole house will have power. Power comes in to the panel as a constant then is changed by the breakers and gauge of wire to either 110v or 220v as it then flows into the house. Check your breakers. Again if you have power to the panel you have power to all lines including the 220 lines

7
308freedom 7 points ago +7 / -0

Standard 220VAC service comes in to your house via two 110VAC legs of service. Nothing is converted at the panel in your house.

What BigIgloo is describing is what happens when one of the 110VAC legs goes out. One side of his breaker panel has gone dark, meaning any 220VAC breaker only has half the power being supplied to the connected device.

He definitely need to call an electrician to have his service checked at the meter. If the meter is getting 220VAC from the power company, then the issue is with the house wiring.

2
BigIgloo 2 points ago +2 / -0

That makes sense. The HVAC guy did say one of the legs was messed up in some way. Until you mentioned it I forgot he used the word leg. He was convinced it was an issue on the provider side or with provider equipment.

Thanks for your explanation, I love Trump supporters.

1
BigIgloo 1 point ago +1 / -0

I honestly don't know what my panel is rated at. I tripped all the breakers. The HVAC guy told me it was an issue from the provider, and said something about the meter not running right either.

If I understood the system better I'd tell you more.

2
308freedom 2 points ago +2 / -0

If the meter is not running right then it is a problem with the power coming to the house.

3
308freedom 3 points ago +3 / -0

Call a local electrician to verify your meter is still getting 220VAC service. If it is, there is a problem with your house wiring, probably either at the meter or between the meter and your breaker box.

BigIgloo 1 point ago +1 / -0

All my neighbors disappeared. Not sure where they went, assume they went somewhere warmer. I did want to ask them about the status of their houses though. Too bad.

19
Pederella 19 points ago +19 / -0

People were told rolling blackouts, 15 minutes to an hour. Those who lost power are coming up on 24 hours, with the prospect of 12-24 more. Many places lost water from their provider, or frozen due to long outages. These are areas that rarely see 32°. They don't have the provisions and knowledge cold areas take for granted. Add in that so few people are natural preppers. It gets to be a fine balance to help those needing help and to not let the masses know how stocked you are. I'll admit some satisfaction in not helping the obnoxiously stupid people on the neighborhood app. The covid spoiled the spoiled people even more. Why are the stores not open? Why is no one delivering, at 10 pm, at 12°, with the roads iced over? Who has what I need right NOW?🙄

10
Knight1_of_Sunset 10 points ago +10 / -0

I'm in upstate NY, getting a bit hammered with the cold. At least we got power here and the house is a least winterized.

Hopefully our Texan pedes stay warm throughout this disaster. And make sure the people responsible for this mess pay.

Praying for you all in Texas! It's 10 degrees here in south Louisiana at the moment, no power since 4 am yesterday. Generator is running heat lamps for our livestock and chickens, our fridge/ freezer, two small space heaters, and one electric blanket for my autistic brother. I am sleeping under 4 blankets and my thermometer says it's 56 in my bedroom right now. The ice, sleet is thick and breaking the trees around us and the car doors are frozen shut. I think vinegar and alcohol can melt it though if needed. The wind is horrible and we have done everything possible, but I still worry about my animals. :(

Praying for everyone suffering with worse!!!!!

2
XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

Vinegar will help melt, but it is slow. Rubbing alcohol though. That will just work.

Hanging_Chad 13 points ago +13 / -0

Fuck Austin's shitty windmills. I'm shivering. Couldn't get generator to turn over, even after using some carb spray. Using a candle now.

Hotels are always an option...

7
Spez_Isacuck [S] 7 points ago +7 / -0

Hang in there, chad. Did you check the spark plug?

5
Hanging_Chad 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yup, I got it to run for like 3 seconds, but gave up after like an hour of tugging

6
308freedom 6 points ago +6 / -0

If you flooded the engine, pull the spark plug and clear off the tip with a propane torch. Get it decently hot to burn off any residual fuel (do this outside, of course). Hold onto it with pliers, it will heat up quick.

Once it cools off, reinstall and make sure you use the choke when trying to start.

Gasoline does not conduct electricity. Once a spark plug is fouled, it won't light off.

3
Hanging_Chad 3 points ago +3 / -0

Thanks for the tips. The spark plugs did look a bit black when I'd looked at it. I'm guessing it's supposed to be metallic? But yeah, got it to start by using a battery jump starter plus carb spray

3
residue69 3 points ago +3 / -0

Carburetor is probably gummed up. Don't leave gas in the carb when you store the generator.

Berryman's carb cleaner will fix it. You can try taking off the air cleaner and spraying out the gum that way, but will probably have to remover at least the float bowl to clean. Dig around on the internet for instructions. There should be plenty of videos that show you what to do.

1
Hanging_Chad 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thanks fren, I'll try that this weekend

2
residue69 2 points ago +2 / -0

Berrymans will eat paint, so protect your eyes and skin. Don't let the idiots at the auto parts store try to sell you Seafoam instead. It's just kerosene. While it will work, it isn't worth $8 a can. Berrymans was $2 a can at the farm and ranch store near me.

I have power but no carpet or livable space because the fire main broke (right outside my apt) and flooded my entire apt. The guy said it's because the complex didn't have the hest turned on on the sprinkler control room that the pipe burst. I was so worried I'd get a rolling blackout in the middle, that would mean no fans, no vacuums, and no heat with 5 inches of water on the ground. I

3
ethan123 3 points ago +4 / -1

Just curious... if you had solar panels and kept them clear of snow, technically could you have electricity independent of the grid?

I mean, keeping them clear of snow is already a pretty big hypothetical...

10
Spez_Isacuck [S] 10 points ago +10 / -0

Sure. All day.

The low temps mostly come at night... Mostly...

2
fazaman 2 points ago +2 / -0

Good to see I'm not the only one who can't use "mostly" in a sentence without adding another at the end.

2
ethan123 2 points ago +3 / -1

Yeah... that's right

I wonder if you can charge enough car batteries (or something... like Elon Musk's Powerwall, or maybe go buy totaled Teslas and use the batteries from them) using your panels during the day then power up during the night. I don't know.

Might just be a crazy idea, and I'm sure that Powerwall or totaled Teslas aren't cheap and could be a fire hazard... I'm not saying that you should do this, probably spend more than it's worth

3
residue69 3 points ago +3 / -0

You can build a powerwall out of discarded laptop batteries, but there's much better batteries available now. Search for the company Battery Hookup. They sell excess batteries from car and bus manufacturers.

3
XCorneliusX 3 points ago +3 / -0

That is a company doing good work. Reuse rather than landfill. Though I abhor the current state of "green tech and power" batteries are good to reuse if viable.

1
Trump2024easy 1 point ago +4 / -3

Imagine if we had some kind of technology that could store electricity...hmmm

2
XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

Although panels have gotten to be more efficient, they are not yet a truly viable main power source for most. If they are clear of snow and the sky has sun, or some sun at least, they can generate. One would be able to run mostly small appliances, not necessarily 1500 watt heaters. Battery stores are a thing but costly.

3
Spezz 3 points ago +3 / -0

power still kicking for me but no water sucks ass

2
WhiteTrashJesus 2 points ago +2 / -0

Please spread the message that using combustion heaters such as propane heaters and grills will kill you from carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as a generator that the exhaust isn’t ventilated properly(fully outside)

2
Farmerbob1 2 points ago +2 / -0

The problem is not green energy, the problem is lack of planning.

In bad weather, solar and wind power can be unproductive, so there needs to be backup power generation and/or the ability to transfer power long distances along transmission lines.

Someone failed to plan properly.

2
JuicyfearsMAGA 2 points ago +2 / -0

Hopefully it's the ones who came from california

2
BuWheats 2 points ago +2 / -0

Heat with a coal stove. Always have heat even without power.

3
XCorneliusX 3 points ago +3 / -0

Most mortgage companies will not accept that as a primary heat source these days, so have it as a backup. That or a fireplace or wood burner with wood stores. My preference of any heat is radiators for primary in northern areas. No extra drying of the air.

1
My2Cents 1 point ago +2 / -1

Fake news.

Coal plants are closed too. Natural gas pipelines frozen. Not winterized. Texas wasn't prepared for a hard winter.

a number of natural gas, coal and nuclear thermal generators began tripping offline starting around 1:30 a.m. Monday, he said. While ERCOT hasn’t yet collected the data to determine the precise causes of those generator outages, a previous report from a 2014 cold snap suggests a range of causes, from natural-gas pipelines freezing up to the failure of equipment that's needed to keep power plants operating safely. https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/winter-storm-forces-blackouts-across-texas

Is the Texas ercot blackouts green move? First I’ve heard of that. Haven’t been On patriot win all weekend

11
Spez_Isacuck [S] 11 points ago +11 / -0

They transitioned a major part of our grid to wind energy. And most of the wind turbines are down because they’re iced up. Then there’s some other factors like a couple natural gas units going down due to frozen pipelines. Electrical generation in Texas is currently down about 40%. Millions are without power and have been for going on 24hrs now. They’re calling them “rolling blackouts,” but there’s not a lot of “rolling” going on. Mainly just one big, prolonged blackout that is expected to last possibly another 12-36hrs.

7
nointernetforyou 7 points ago +7 / -0

Don't rely on that 12-36 hr number. As someone in the northeast who gets a good ice storm every year, this shit can take days and days if trees take out lines.

Pro tip. Keep a faucet on slow drip and no frozen pipes.

1
Spez_Isacuck [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Reality: the pipes aren’t buried very deep in TX, so many people’s water supply is frozen before it even reaches the house.

0
Margeshrimpson 0 points ago +1 / -1

Why don't people have power in texas?

3
fazaman 3 points ago +3 / -0

Extreme cold temperatures for the region causing a high demand to warm the homes. Add in the extreme cold freezing the windmills, which lowers production, and you have rolling blackouts. Plus the snow, and probably the power switching on and off from the blackouts is causing failures in parts of the grid.

2
XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

20% is what I read is the amount of electricity the Texas grid is tied to, so when it went down, it taxed the grid and they had to blackout areas. Now some power is said to be coming from neighbor states causing rolling blackouts.
