It was Wendy's or Burger King that introduced a 1/3 lb burger to compete with McDonald's quarter pounder and it failed because consumers thought 1/3 was smaller than 1/4. True story.

Or A&W is just smaller and had a poor advertising campaign or literally any other variable could be applied to that situation. By this logic if they just made a 1/5 lb burger it would sell well, but good luck with that.
