Do you have shit tier pipes in the south? Below 20 is your threshold? I don’t build houses so I don’t really know, but it’s below 20 all the time in the north. My pipes have never burst
It has to do with pipes not being built below the freezing level. In the north, you can keep the water running and the "warm" water under the ground will continually warm up the pipes that go through the freezing level. In the south, the entire pipe freezes. Not just the part that goes up.
Keep your taps running and your pipes won't freeze.
Just a steady trickle will do the trick. This includes the hot water taps and your tub.
Flush idle toilets a few times a day, too.
