It is totally cultural as the mother is the rock and center of the family and constantly protect their sons. The men were supposed to work to earn a living for their family. Now, this is not happening in Italy. Here it is happening as well, but teen and older males are relegated to the basement and basically live more isolated from their own families and personal interaction with their peers. In many cases the parents both work and are not happy with having their adult sons living home, as this is against their own thoughts about responsibility. This isolation from families and society creates more social and mental issues than it does in Italy. Different results from a similar problem.
