Remember someone here a while back explaining that Mormons basically do whatever their church leaders tell them when it comes to politics and Romney is a bigshot in the church so he does whatever he wants while they eat it.
Dont know how true this actually is, but thats what it seems like.
It's usually overstated by a lot. The church doesn't tell people who to vote for or endorse political candidates. I don't think it's fair or accurate to say that Mormons "basically do whatever their church leaders tell them to do." If you've been in Mormon leadership you'd know how hard it is to get the members to do anything you ask them to do, much less everything you tell them to do.
Romney having been the only Mormon Presidential candidate definitely gives him a ton of name recognition in Utah. There's a lot of Mormons who wish he'd won in 2012 and have a good opinion of him because of that, but who don't follow politics and don't know how shitty Romney has been as a senator (and a person) since then. That and money are the obstacles to removing him in 2024 (there isn't really a process to remove him until his term ends).
