Freezing to death will certainly reduce people's carbon footprint.

Anyone else just blown away by the irony of Texas, a massive energy exporting state, not able to keep itself warm? That's like starving to death in an all-you-can-eat buffet.

tholins 80 points ago +85 / -5

Texan here. The biggest issue we have right now is that our power plants are just not set up to deal with this kind of cold. It’s nothing that can’t be handled, but it requires investment in certain mitigation measures that 99.999999% of the time here aren’t required.

This isn’t political. Trying to make this political is only going to let the Democrats fuck us.

22
ExileOnRedditStreet 22 points ago +22 / -0

Was thinking that. I've never seen or even heard of snow in Galveston.

34
tholins 34 points ago +34 / -0

Apparently this has only happened like four times in the past 150 years. Maybe never for Galveston, I don’t know.

Where I live, we’re in that weird slice of the state that’s on Louisiana’s grid. Apparently one of their main natural gas plants went down, which is why we have outages right now in our area.

I mean, energy is generated by steam turbines. Which means there’s a ton of water in the system that can freeze and burst piping. Preventing problems like that is expensive. Now Oklahoma is getting slammed too, but I’d bet their infrastructure is modified to deal with this. If you look at the power outage maps, the entire gulf coast is being impacted.

I do think this is an excellent warning for why fully transitioning to “green” leaves us more at the mercy of weather events. HOWEVER, the primary cause of this here in Texas is not wind power. What the Democrats in our state are currently claiming is that deregulation caused this. So they’re going to use this to fuck us all over while y’all are wanking about windmills.

james43552352345 9 points ago +9 / -0

100% can confirm, dems are pushing the regulation approach but I'm hoping most of the normies wake up to the fact that 100% renewable grid is a pipe dream that will never happen. You can have some renewable but always make sure the fossil fuel grid can power everything 100% but yeah, these power plants should have been weatherized better. We currently have a glut of natural gas on the market, in storage, and events like this would allow that excess gas to be burned off.

I agree. Why am I required by law to carry 1 in a million insurance on things but the government can exclude contingency plans for high power usage? If it happens 4 times every 150 years, then why would you take the risk of not being prepared when millions of lives are at risk?

3
morningpancakes 3 points ago +3 / -0

Usually it always boils down to $.

Honestly, this doesn't seem like a left or right issue. If the government tasked private companies to account for this rarely occurring contingency, private enterprise would be screaming "socialism" "undue burden" "too much red tape." The other way around, you get what you're seeing now.

Once you know something there's no excuse to pretend it was too low risk.

Likewise Cuomo placing sick people in old age homes knowing it would kill off old people. It doesn't happen that often until you get a pandemic and its the first thing that happens.

PATRIOTS, WE ALL NEED TO PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE BEING PLACED IN HARMS WAY DUE TO SUBVERSION OF OUR POWER INFRASTRUCTURE. WE MUST PRAY FOR WARMER WEATHER TO TAKE THE STRESS OFF OF THE SYSTEM. AND PRAY FOR JUSTICE FOR THE TRAITORS WHO LED US TO THIS PLACE. PLEASE PRAY NOW. GOD WILL NOT LET HIS CHILDREN FREEZE TO DEATH.

10
PieceOfParchment7 10 points ago +11 / -1

God will let people freeze to death.

He gave you free will to protect yourself.

You have given up that free will and now rely on the Government to save you.

We are here alone.

Save yourself.

4
RiverFenix 4 points ago +5 / -1

taking stress off the system only ensures we continue the status quo. The best thing that could happen is another month or two of freezing temperatures in Texas to force people to open their fucking eyes and start producing OIL and burning the fuck out of it.

Well to be fair they are the only areas where they'd be somewhat effective.

18
DrCowboyPresident 18 points ago +18 / -0

This shit isn't effective at all. Wind and solar are expensive to build, their power generation is completely unreliable meaning you need traditional power plants on 80% standby at all times to step in for their unreliable asses.

If not for Govt money and bribes, this crap would be nonexistent except for fringe uses.

5
Wrexxis780 5 points ago +5 / -0

They are somewhat effective if you just use lefty logic and disregard all the negatives you just said.

5

Gulleyfoyleismyname 23 points ago +23 / -0

I Florida in case of hurricane I have a generator and a window unit a/c to keep me alive in August with no electricity.

I have propane stoves and bbq grills with necessary accoutrements to cook.

I have a hand pump well.

Probs a good idea for none of us to rely on public utilities since if our social credit score is too low they'll cut off our power and water.

5
james43552352345 5 points ago +5 / -0

It is just a good idea in general to prep for natural disasters in your area. Having a backup power supply, method to cook without utilities is literally the first step to preparing. The people who are getting royally fucked right now are the people who literally did NOTHING to prepare for ANY type of disaster. These are the same type of idiots that rode out hurricane Katrina then cried when they were stuck in their house.

Viva the hydro electric dams!

7
SevenThunders 7 points ago +7 / -0

Here in WA state our officials are trying to tear down all of our hydroelectric damns that makes electricity here dirt cheap and reliable, and is the cornerstone of the economy in eastern WA.

I think it's because of this that the globalists who rule over us, have decided that hydro-electric power is not clean renewable energy. They claim it kills fish, even though most of these damns have perfectly effective fish ladders.

CA even refuses to buy hydro power from the northwest cause it's not "green". This is full clown world in action. They are trying to de-industrialize the west.

Well, this Pat is sitting on about 4 months of food, 50 gal of gas, a generator, plenty of fire wood, and a sweet ass home made wood burning stove. There’s nothing wrong with power in Oklahoma. Idk where this dipshit got their info. My power was out less than an hour. Plus, we don’t use the wind turbine bs here. Maybe far east OK, but even that is not a legitimate source of power for them. Plus, I haven’t heard anything about raising gas (guessing natural gas?) prices up 40%. Calling bs on that as well. Oklahoma is a top 3 natural gas producer, nationally. B-b-b-buulllshit.

Northwest Arkansas pede here. This is the worst sustained cold & snow that we've seen in probably almost 30 years, if my memory serves me. We were lucky to avoid the rolling blackout at our house last night, where it was -8 degrees. We just aren't set up for that kind of cold, as we almost never see it. It's 16 degrees now, and they're talking like the power could go out at any time. It won't get above freezing until Saturday, and is likely to snow some more before it does. In the past 20 years, we'd go some winters without even seeing snow on the ground, and when we do, the temps usually rise high enough the next day to remove it. It's been very rare to see snow on the ground for any sustained amount of time.

I'll be buying a generator after this.

2
ChilledCovfefe 2 points ago +2 / -0

Not defending wind power but this is a once in probably 100 year weather condition in the southern US. The Texas electric grid is built for air conditioning with or without windmills. I bet many houses in TX have electric heat because its not used as often (Florida is this way. Nobody has gas heat) So in cold weather, those electric heat coils murder the power plants.

2
EndTheFedReserve 2 points ago +2 / -0

Nah were just entering a grand solar minimum as NASA has warned the last decade and the lobbying global warming groups spent millions of dollars paying off NASA to keep their mouths closed that the sun being in hibernation will lead to a miniature ice age. Like the Maunder Minimum of 1645 lasting to about 1715 being the most recent grand solar minimum. They just don't want you to hear about it cause it'll tarnish their green energy plot.
