Texas here, I have maybe 30 minutes of power, then it's off again for several hours, then maybe 30 minutes, then off for several hours.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!!! Fight them,

Ninki333 43 points ago +43 / -0

Canada here. I can get more power when I go inna woods camping . Never a better time to consider a gasoline powered generator.

17
Licensetomeme 17 points ago +17 / -0

Our internet still sux, though. I can't watch my shows like "goose plays hockey on a zamboni eh" without it stuttering.....

9
Ninki333 9 points ago +9 / -0

Just throw snowballs at the antennae next time your out havin a dart. Or pay a Newfie to do it.

9
Licensetomeme 9 points ago +9 / -0

Now that's next level. Here I thought replacing my hockey stick shaped antennae with poutine was good enough, but I didn't think about snowballs! What the puck was I thinking?!?!?

6
Ninki333 6 points ago +6 / -0

Well shit eh. Are you sure your using the right cheese curds in that poutine. You shouldn't have to throw snowballs at it.

2
txladyvoter 2 points ago +2 / -0

The problem with generators is when you run out of gasoline and try to get some more and the power is out and you can't fill your car much less your generator.

Now I hear propane generators are a thing. Someone who knows can 'splain it to me.

2
Mashiki 2 points ago +2 / -0

Propane gens have been a thing for a really long time, the farm I used to pick tobacco at had one(that's going back to the 80s). We used to at least in this area of (Southwestern)Ontario get the occasional summer or winter storm that would knock out power for a week.

Having a backup for your well, sump, boiler/air forced furnace, and/or anything important like storage tanks or expensive animals was a must. It's not quite so common now with large areas finally getting access to NG, but you can still drive down country roads here and see farms with 3 or 4 500gal tanks, two for propane, two for NG.

Not a Texan, but are backup home generators really that uncommon in Texas?

15
ArriveViolently 15 points ago +15 / -0

A true "backup home generator" solution is going to run about 10k between the genset, the transfer switch, and labor to install and certify it all. That is not an option for most folks.

11
Afeazo 11 points ago +11 / -0

Very true. But my distrust in public utilities makes it pretty much a necessity for being a home owner, when buying a house may as well budget in a generator. Mine still runs on a direct gas line from the utility, but natural gas delivery seems to be one the more reliable side. Would like a tank on my property but it’s not really appropriate where I live if regulations even allowed it lol

7
patriothorse 7 points ago +7 / -0

It's become a fact of life here in California to own a generator. I wonder how many Californians left theirs behind when moving to Texas this year? (Note: I'm a professional real estate photographer and most of the homes I shoot have generators and most of the homes that sell in my area were because owners were moving to Texas)

2
papagiorgio-g 2 points ago +2 / -0

Depends on what you need to keep going. All I'm worried about is all the Angus strip steak, rib roasts, pork chops, hamburger, and bacon in the freezer. A little Honda Eu2000I cost me $1,000 6 years or so back. The little thing just sips gas and running it periodically keeps everything frozen. I'm not so much worried about heating the house because we almost never get THAT cold here. My next house will have a wood stove for emergencies though.

1
ArriveViolently 1 point ago +1 / -0

Very true. OP had made it sound like he was talking about whole house generators, which definitely are pricey. I think for most people, a small inverter generator is perfectly fine, so long as they maintain it and know what it will and will not do when needed.

1
UndeadRevolver 1 point ago +1 / -0

Put your stuff in a plastic tote.

Put the tote outside.

You're welcome.

1
papagiorgio-g 1 point ago +1 / -0

The temperature was right around 28-36 degrees for two days. Fine for refrigerator items, but freezers are usually around zero. As much as my wife makes fun of me, I'm not completely stupid.

1
UndeadRevolver 1 point ago +1 / -0

Bummer I thought it was cold.

Why not natural gas fired ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANTS instead of these taxpayer subsidized wind mills ? Who would have thought ?

1
Auroraalpha 1 point ago +1 / -0

We can go full CCP Chynah! Have the natural gas plants turn the wind turbines!

1
slangin_paint 1 point ago +1 / -0

Gas wind?

1
Datamancer 1 point ago +1 / -0

Still a bit of an issue, the water inlets for cooling are freezing and the gas wells are freezing up. Coal has the same water intake issue. Nukes would have the same issue. Need a minor engineering update to be able to route some of the hot water coming out of the system to keep the inlets open.

3
ikeepforgettingname 3 points ago +3 / -0

In some places we have no need. This is only the 6th time I've ever seen snow in my life. Also the natural gas is still going so stoves and some heaters still run fine.

I mean it is only like 28F if I was freezing I could run my truck and get warm or make a alcohol toilet paper in can heater for literally one day and be cutting grass again the next. Speaking of as soon as the ice thaws I need to mow the lawn, which is still green.

2
Tejas_Pepe 2 points ago +2 / -0

Also the natural gas is still going so stoves and some heaters still run fine.

Yeah, I have natural gas space heat and gas stove, so heating and cooking is no problem, just no juice. We're on a record run of like 30+ minutes now.

I feel for the folks with all electric homes.

2
Tejas_Pepe 2 points ago +2 / -0

Never felt the need for one, power occasionally goes out for a few hours after a T-storm. I'm sure as hell getting one now though.

Let's not protend like the kill coal and kill fracking agenda didn't benefit the board members of foreign energy companies such as Barisma and CEFC.

I wonder if there could be any conflicts of interest there?

Anyone know of any family members of politicians that are on boards of these companies?

16
theblackprince 16 points ago +17 / -1

Those who think this is about green energy vs non-green energy might be more ignorant about what's going on than those whining about climate change.

2
SecondProtectsFirst 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, I mean here in Colorado it gets this cold all the damn time and most people have Xcel, which is like 19% wind power. Don't see us getting rolling blackouts.

I think the main difference is most of us in cold climates use natural gas or propane for heat, not electric heat. When it gets really cold in a place that doesn't equip their homes for the cold, the grid isn't going to be able to handle everyone using their heat at full blast. Especially if people have to use auxiliary resistance heating, that's basically just a giant toaster.

Inb4 Biden proposes a new natural gas pipeline from Mexico, that oddly goes directly through cartel land. (Look at the maps of gas/oil reserves and then cartel controlled areas). Maybe Hunter can get on those boards too since.. you know.. experience this time.

4

Are you referring to Hunter's experience with oil companies or with Cartel's crack?

When Middle America NEEDS energy, it's rationed. Leftism in a nutshell

21
CraftyBarnardo [S] 21 points ago +21 / -0

Rationing anything is what the left strives for. They want to ration freedom, speech, travel, happiness, you name it...

13
Steven_IDGAF_Miller 13 points ago +13 / -0

The left seeks Control. It's always about Control.

They want to control what you see, say, hear, read, think, where you travel, how you get there, if you are allowed to be happy and if or when you can protect yourself/family/property.

Rationing is simply a means to an end for them. Reduce the amount of anything and it becomes a scarce resource that can be dolled out to those who are deemed 'worthy'.

If there is an abundance of something, it is much more difficult to control who has access to it or what the cost is.

This is exactly why Joepedo banned fracking and oil leases. The plan is to make oil expensive again so that renewables can pretend to compete with fossils and the chinese companies that have been fleecing us for decades can start doing so again with their puppet in place.

21
Granny 21 points ago +21 / -0

I think it's kinda important that coal is needed to make steel, and oil is needed to make plastic. If anyone is against coal and oil, please give up anything you own that's made of steel or plastic, before you start your hypocritical ranting.

6
Steven_IDGAF_Miller 6 points ago +6 / -0

I would add that they should give up anything that is transported using Oil.

6
CraftyBarnardo [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

5
ProfessorOak 5 points ago +5 / -0

What I find so frustrating is that no one is stopping liberals from using or not using whatever they want. Want to reduce your use of coal and oil? Try homesteading or living off the grid. Want to use an electric car? Go ahead. They could even promote certain lifestyles or brands and create a movement to accomplish some of their goals. They could boycott companies that they disagree with. They'd probably get a good deal of traction and be better received by conservatives if they weren't such authoritarians about everything.

and this can be created in relatively cheaply in quantities that keep prices for many product low.

15
CanadianTrump 15 points ago +15 / -0

Yep, Green movement in Canada gets real quiet every October and suddenly reappears in May.

Canadians use on average 15k KWH each a year.

And as Texas now sees, if we don't get 15k KWH, we freeze to death. Humans are mostly water after all.

7
RiverFenix 7 points ago +7 / -0

Canadian homes are the best, because we get the -35C to +35C swing between winter and summer. Our houses are built to keep the heat in during the winter and keep the cool in during the summer.

Even if I moved to Texas, I'd build a basement and install a furnace. It would run on oil and I would fill it up once a decade as needed.

4
Deplorable61 4 points ago +4 / -0

If i remember correctly, the raycis math for converting Communist to Freedom is (9/5)C+32=F so, for a real quick approximation just knock the Communist down to the nearest 10, double it, and add 30. -35°C would be, roughly, -30°F and 35°C would be, roughly 90°F.

1
RiverFenix 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think -40C is -40F, but +35C is closer to 105F

Naturally the question needs to include a reminder that the purpose of this planned transition to "renewables" is to fight global warming.

1
CraftyBarnardo [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

And Texas (and 14 other states with them) are learning the hard way the true costs of that scam.

6
trayvon 6 points ago +6 / -0

Huge scam. I think China is effing with the weather. Straight up check out the Beijing Weather Modification Office. They are at least 10-15 years ahead of what they publicize with this technology in my opinion. Trudeau in Canada trying to train CCP in winter warfare, biggest climate dipstick of all time. Now snow hits Texas, right now? This moment? When Sinister Gates comes on tv to talk climate nonsense? Please call me insane so I'll level out, but something doesn't feel right about the timing. We're getting close to tower of Babel, our empires are gonna get scattered. I'm probably nuts for thinking it, but we can already manipulate streams and waterflow, wind energy, etc. Doesn't seem out of reach anymore to suggest that the weather is being messed with. The snow in Canada a few weeks ago had a viscosity to it, never felt that before like it was slick snow particles. Looked and felt different, first thing I thought was "CCP" but I dunno I'm probably crazy at this point gang, don't listen to me. All opinion.

We already have a stable carbon-free source of energy with Nuclear power. The problem could be easily solved if they wanted it to be solved.

Of course we know this has more to do with seizing control of the economy than it has to do with the environment.

4
The_RedWolf 4 points ago +4 / -0

The more important part is winterization

4

Texas here. We have a target on our back, in the line of sight for Dems, the CCP, globalists, etc., all of whom want to break Texas in order to have the other states crumple. And if you think for one minute that you should rule out the possibility that the entire state isn't being punished by the powers which be (there has never been a time in recorded history that the ENTIRE state---EVERY single county-- has been hit with this kind of temperature blow), then you have never researched weather weapons technology. And, yeah, it IS a thing; the UN even has a treaty banning the use of weather weapons, and you don't need treaties for things which can not be done or which do not exist! The Xiden administration isn't merely shooting holes in the floor of our ship of state, it is blasting cannons through the hulls to sink us quickly...stay safe, Pedes.
