Why didn't the maskers keep 6' away from the normal folk? If they were honestly worried about catching a virus, the would have kept back at a "safe" distance.
Because it's not about the virus, and likely never was. For the politicians mandating masks it's about power and control. For your average busybody, it's a socially enforceable sense of moral superiority that would unobtainable to them in any other context.
