The last blackout we had was at least five hours long. Meanwhile, upperclass neighborhoods in DFW continue to have power uninterrupted. You do the math.

Back in'07 me and a buddy lived near Independence Iowa, in an old country house. That winter an ice storm took out all the power lines and we lost electricity. We made it three days before we each went to our parent's houses, where they had power. It took them almost two weeks to fix the lines. Not sure what we would have done if we didn't have family to stay with.

A friend took a motorcycle trip through part of the area that had been hit and shared a bunch of pictures of all the flattened cornfields and downed trees. The mainstream media hadn't said a peep about it. I didn't even know what a 'derecho' was until he posted the pictures.

They cut the power in CA because the state was trying to shift responsibility for the wildfires from the state's poor forest management to the power companies. So power companies understandably decided to to take the liability of being blamed for burning the state down whenever it gets hot, dry, and windy.

20
CucksForTheDonald 20 points ago +20 / -0

No kidding, PG&E went bankrupt over this. Given potential bankruptcy over liability claims, I would be shutting down power as well.

10
slangin_paint 10 points ago +10 / -0

but if power companies go out of business that means more less-expensive electricity for everybody, right?

22

The black out we had was on the entire west coast. It we had weather like Texas right now back than it would of killed a bunch of people. But, it was the middle of summer so no airconditioning.

I'm part of a co-op here in north central Florida: Sumter Electric Cooperative, SECO. They are excellent! And they let it be known on a regular basis they they are beholden only to their customers, as well as employees and shareholders, all who have to be customers of SECO.

10
DonJr24 10 points ago +10 / -0

Oh there will be action taken, the issue will be in which direction. The dems and the media are already out in force trying to protect their precious wind turbines.

12
7thGenTexan 12 points ago +12 / -0

Exactly. They’re actually blaming—wait for it—natural gas. What?! Fucking idiots. The only issue we’re having with natural, gas is them not having electric companies use the fucktons of natural gas we have in Texas.

Always a good idea to be prepared...except I did not plan well enough...generator is up next on the plan...people in town did not prepare...I had a full tank of gas ...lines up the wazooo at HEB this afternoon they opened at noon...really crazy one local place in town was open but his lights were down dim..I only stopped because of all the pick up trucks parked on the street...really infuriating...this rolling. black out...WTF

Power was shut around 2pm with us. Came back at 2am. Cut off again at 6 pm.

No water. Their excuse is the water table is low, and that people letting their spigots to dribble was the cause.... smh on that one.

3
pmyourcovfefes 3 points ago +3 / -0

2
pmyourcovfefes 2 points ago +2 / -0

For those who can’t afford a generator or don’t have enough weather events to justify the cost of one a portable propane powered heater may help next time.

My plan for times like this is portable heater, lanterns that recharge as well as take batteries (have stocked up) and firewood. We can be warm, see at night, and can heat food outside over the fire pit. So far, never been without power for more than a day but the ice storm heading our way may challenge that record!

Because modern life in America has 'advanced' to the point you can live your life in complete ignorance of everything around you and still function. People have fogotten what it is like to actually suffer. Hell even our 'poor' live better lives than the well to do in other nations. Can't remember the last time I saw a generational welfare recipient who wasn't well fed with nice clothes and a cellphone and a comfy government supplied apartment unless they were a drug addict or mentally ill and homeless but even then they still get cellphones and welfare if they choose.

What is that old saying? Bad times make strong men who bring good times which makes weak men who bring the bad times. Well we are at the point the weak men are the most populous and you can see the result. So prepare for some real bad times to wake the population back up. Our nation has been at this point before and gotten past it stronger than ever and we will do it yet again.

27

12
SquiggyMcPepe 12 points ago +12 / -0

Oh the great depression is one. The 60's and the cold war are another though we didn't go far enough to stamp out the commies and they have come back stronger than ever. The civil war seems to come to mind for some reason or another. Burning of the white house by angry british pissed we got away from them and the choking of our sea trade and prosperity by blockades and conscription of any Americans they caught. There are many other stumbling points but not quite as major but still meaningful.

4
Comntrinchief 4 points ago +4 / -0

Read up on how God sent a tornado to DC that stopped the Red Coats from advancing further into DC. Truly a miracle.

9
theblackprince 9 points ago +9 / -0

If you're being honest, this is black pill territory. The instances listed below occurred when people still saw themselves and each other as Americans and were proud of it. Those days are dwindling if not already over. Our tribe is being ripped apart from the inside out.

4
JesusWept 4 points ago +4 / -0

During the civil war the country was literally and politically divided. Both sides considered themselves proud Americans, thought the other side tyrants or traitors. The war itself is what we think of, but this was an awful, ongoing situation for decades before the shooting started.

Interesting to remember that the north and south remained ay great enmity for a hundred years. I well remember as a kid in the early 60s how the southern states voted as a block (the blue dog democrats) and were very hostile to "yankees" passing through. They taught their kids a mythology of honor v tyranny that lasted long after the last vet had died.

6
hectorspector 6 points ago +6 / -0

NO such thing as "yankees" in my grandparents generation. It's damned yankees.

Holy fuck. If my line of work had "controlled outages", they would erect a gallows outside.

47
phil_d_snutz 47 points ago +48 / -1

Controlled outages is the only option until power generation can meet demand. If demand exceeds generation then there's risk of more uncontrolled outages when distribution breakers start tripping. Or the electrical utility could tie in generators which feed a few homes but obviously that requires a ton of generators, workers, and time.

26
deleted 26 points ago +26 / -0

JesusWept 24 points ago +24 / -0

Yep. I worked in energy for years, power cos. have a legal responsibility to provide power. Its not an option. In return they get tax breaks, price support, etc. If they fail they should lose their license and be replaced by competitors. Its a good system thats worked for 100 years until federal "green" mandate interference.

4

Or maybe we could get rid of state involvement in this shit entirely and let competition ALWAYS do its thing.

-12
TheMemeSpiceMustFlow -12 points ago +16 / -28

The main reason is it's ~20 degrees lower than the typical lowest low during the year. Normally 15-25 and it's -2 during the night the last 2 nights. Stupid people running their AC at 65+ when their AC can't heat their house that many degrees above the outside temp so it just runs constantly and never stops. Also many electric companies charge a flat rate per KWH used, and so demand sky rockets but the price does not so people keep using electricity they don't need when others desperately need it. Also electric companies are never held responsible for not being able to deliver electricity, at least as far as I know, so there's no incentive for them to plan for extreme demand. They can just shut of your electric even though you have a contract and there's no repercussions afaik.

It's not full blow socialism, but maybe a little. Also maybe a little of corrupt capitalism. Or it might just be people entering in to stupid contracts. Why would you enter into a contract with a company that can fail to deliver the product you need with no consequences? I don't know much about the legal aspect of how electric delivery is handled but someone who does could probably give more info.

21
Thrasymachus 21 points ago +23 / -2

so people keep using electricity they don't need

That's not how the relationship between electricity price and demand works. If your electricity price skyrockets it takes about three billing cycles before households say, hmm, maybe we should consider unplugging the toaster when we're not using it, see if that helps, etc. The elasticity doesn't accommodate special time-sensitive circumstances; it would merely be gouging.

7
TheMemeSpiceMustFlow 7 points ago +10 / -3

Not sure what you mean. Texas has a wholesale electric price that updates every 5 minutes and there are plans you can use that you pay wholesale price at the time + delivery instead of a flat rate. Normally it is around 2 cents a kWh plus 3.92 cents delivery per kWh, but it shot up to over $9 per kWh because demand was so high. That could easily costs you hundreds of dollars to run your HVAC system for an hour. Luckily I saw this coming because I was using Griddy for a while and was able to switch to a plan that charged only 7.5 cents per kWh. Next day that company removed that plan and switched to a 15cents per kWh plan.

5
CucksForTheDonald 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yeah, being on a moment-to-moment plan like Griddy sounds great until you realize it's a lot like shorting stocks, it has infinite downside. You're not going to learn how much the price has shot up for the last 5 minutes until you've already used it.

3
Comntrinchief 3 points ago +3 / -0

The grid operator is legally required to shut off all businesses usage first. If it is found out they did not do this there will be hell to pay.

13
lefty295 13 points ago +13 / -0

Electricity is totally socialized. At least in my area (not in Texas though). There's one company and they get a monopoly from the local government.

10
JesusWept 10 points ago +10 / -0

There are state public utilities commissions in every state that give certain advantages to utilities in exchage for steady production. Extreme cold is not an excuse - they hit 100 year lows today but they have to be prepared for 500 year lows. This is doable with fossill fuels because they can be physically stockpiled in the offseason at lower prices. I dont know to what extent wind and solar can be efficiently stored.

Energy is the post heavily regulated industry in the U.S. They dont have the option of faoling. Contact state PUCOs and tear into them. Hold them accountable.

I thought you were going in a totally different direction.

Yes, this is definitely crony capitalism and overregulation.

The power companies should have sent out a notice to all customers on Friday that electricity was going to be scarce and therefore the price would triple for the next week. That would have gotten people to conserve and it would have encouraged the power company to buy fuel at inflated rates rather than just sustain blackouts.

4

My brother just had a pipe burst. I’m waiting a couple of days before turning the water back on. Still have cast iron pipes. My city just sent out a boil drinking water alert because pressure has dropped below safe levels.

10

Cold temperatures kill very fast.

5
Kweebecker 5 points ago +5 / -0

Speaking as a Canadian, there's a reason there isn't a homelessness problem up here like California's, and it isn't our healthcare or social plans. If you haven't ever seen a frozen corpse, you don't work within a city, that's for sure. All the major cities have departments who need to pick up the frozen dead on the regular. And it isn't like those homeless are transplants from Cali, they're also Canadians, and know how to deal with the cold. The knowledge doesn't change their life expectancy from "next February", though.

Now, these people DO have homes, and given A/C is a thing, I imagine they're insulated homes which would help, but if they aren't, then yeah, gonna have a few not waking up if they're dumb about it. But I think blackouts will not kill from cold so much as from key electronics: People who have at-home medical equipment, in example.

How much you fuckers want to bet this is globalist sabotage on one of the countries biggest independent grid systems? Either by RINOs or Dem operatives, take your pick. The weather is obviously key factor, but it seems too widespread than what power outages should've happened in record conditions.

You'll know when you see Biden, media, Dems, social media ass blasting to the public that this is solely Abbott and Republicans fault for wanting to be independent from the Feds, yet another glorious NEVER LET A CRISIS GO TO WASTE.

My two cents... this is related to all of the thousands of administrators involved in the power grid working from home for almost a year.

15

I guess this is their dark winter. Call me crazy (please do) but I'm living in a post reality where the Chicoms own the US President and have access to power grid, sinister gates does tv interviews about climate disasters the DAY OF climate disasters and pumping us with fake meat, and people are still not open to the fact that this might have something to do with globalists stealing our election to remove populism and patriotism? We're the last continent to not go socialist/communist so hey 2021 why not try on some Commie Pants for a little while. FFS.

13

No regulated power since 5:30 yesterday.

Two generators are up and running giving us heat and a few amenities like the coffee maker.

No need for the refrigerator -- leaving the doors open keeps the food cold!

Go wind turbines!

10

So, not from Texas, and don't really know the full story here, but why is Texas, of all states, relying on wind turbines and not nuclear power?

12

Big Oil hates nuclear almost as much as Big Green does. So the foundation was already set when the transplants yelled "nimby! nimby!"

1
Best4Business 1 point ago +1 / -0

Fuck that noise. I have a lake property in southern MO near a Nuclear Power Plant. The wildlife there are flurishing. The air is nicer, the water is cleaner. The only down side is we're close enough to hear the hum of the turbines at night. But I live next to an Ameren coal power plant, that's just on the other side of the river here and I can hear the turbines going at night there too. Doesn't bother me a bit. I'm hoping that the plant goes Nuclear soon. I would be fucking thrilled for that.

I lived in Jacksonville Fl . Every house had a fireplace except apartments back then. The worst cold we ever saw was 7 degrees and that was in 1986, and snow in 89. It comes down to not expecting it. Its not a yearly occurrence. It like Miami seeing snow it can happen, but it would be rare

Anybody get the feeling this is supposed to be some sort of "message" to Texans? I mean who can't read a weather forecast and get the system ready for it? That's what they do for a living or at least that's what they get paid to do for you. Now people are having to huddle together in "stations" to get warm. Suspicious as hell considering the past year.

Just imagine if China had built this grid. Maybe they did. Maybe they will. One wonders if there will be any investigation into these outages and how they will be prevented in the future.
