On one hand, it makes sense. Supply is low and they’re attempting to incentivize producers to get capacity back on the grid ASAP.
Again, it bears repeating that infrastructure in Texas is not set up to handle this level of freezing temperatures. Power generation involves steam, which is subject to freezing in un-insulated pipes. And natural gas can freeze the fuck up too (I don’t think many people know that), which is why something like 8 million people in northern Mexico are out of power too; our gas exports froze up in the pipelines down there. It was not just wind power going offline that caused this problem.
This will NOT be a cheap or easy fix for some of these plants. Who the fuck is supposed to pay for that? The government? Great, the rest of us get taxed because some people were on variable rate plans.
On the other hand, this feels an awful lot like price gouging during an emergency. I don’t know the legalities of that, but I do hope it gets rolled into the pending investigation.
Apparently the “approved” rate for homeowners with variable rate plans right now averages to $450/day. That really sucks, and I genuinely feel bad for those who are going to get fucked by this. Best thing anybody can do right now is switch energy plans to a fixed rate immediately.
Just a question from a moderate Democrat, I know we're extinct like the wooly mammoth, but should there be any accountability for the elected officials that oversaw this shit show for the last decade? everyone knew it was going to happen again and no one did anything about it.
