Texan here with a good deal of knowledge of oil & gas markets. I also went to school with the lib Michael Webber quoted in article, so take his comments as slanted.

There is NO REASON other than ineptitude and poor management that Texas should have these power shortages. NONE.

Oil rigs burn off nat gas all day, 365 days a year. No one wants it. In 2018-20 companies had to PAY to get rid of it. In the last five years, Texas could have cheaply stored enough natural gas to have powered the entire country this last week. Cheap compared to the cost we will pay for this week.

Heads should roll, class-action lawsuits should be filed and ending our dependence on unreliable sources of energy should be stopped in it's tracks.

Natural gas is and has been THE solution for energy in much of N. America. It is plentiful, clean and requires no refinement. Only China and liberals want alternatives at current tech levels.

Generally speaking, Texas Tribune is a liberal rag. Approach with the same skepticism you'd approach CNN or MSNBC.

Apparently, wind in Texas was some ~23% of their generating capacity

Can't find a decent answer for Solar as nobody breaks down commercial vs. private solar etc...

End of the day Texas energy infrastructure wasnt prepared for a winter blast. However, I am curious to know what % of renewable, expecally wind and solar, has been shut down and compare that to the % of natural gas. Most renewable seems to be flimsy, we need to focus on nuclear if we really want to go the renewable energy route.
