We were due to look at a house with a private well (well, shared between 4 houses) and a septic system this weekend and I was thinking about not bothering because "Well, that seems like a hassle to own and what if things go wrong", this whole event has definitely changed my mind.
We don't live in a world where local authorities are run by competent people, where the utilities are reliable, and you can rely on anyone else to care if you live or die. I think I'm gonna buy a house with both well and septic system, buy a full house generator (expensive but so worth it) and work to continue reducing my dependency on local government/utilities.
Their incompetence has been a huge wakeup call for me to start prepping and take this stuff seriously.

A good gen set is indispensable. Plus adequate stored fuel. Diesel or propane, enough for a couple of weeks. Can't imagine being without Iron Mike.
Except wells are pumped by electric sumps.
So even if you had your own well, you'd be fucked.
