I live in central New York State, and remember many years ago during a long cold-snap, and high oil prices, were forcing people to buy kerosene heaters. I bought one myself and used it. If I recall correctly, there was a shortage of kerosene heaters at the time, and it became very hard to find them.

james43552352345 [S] 18 points ago +18 / -0

Yup, 100% this. If us Texans don't put a stop to this then we're going to be even in deeper shit. Imagine if Texas went full bore on building out wind turbines and closing fossil fuel power plants? Imagine if 50%+ or 75%+ of the grid was powered by wind turbines?

And that's what these fuckers do. They encourage power producers to build wind turbines and then they protest and demand fossil fuel plants be closed at the same time....undermining our grid reliability non-stop. Then when the shit gets fucked up, they say we need more government.

Then they demand us to share our prepper supplies to "help a brother out". No, fuck that.

7
GeoG85 7 points ago +7 / -0

Oh yea, they cause the problem then try to sell the solution.

Didn't Gulliani call this a form of racketeering? Mobsters demanding protection money?

11
CelesteD 11 points ago +11 / -0

r/preppers tries, but unfortunately got pretty inundated by leftists.

at first it was almost based but those voices got drowned out and "stopped posting"

the sub has a strict "no politics" rule which I suspect is rules for thee not me, like everything else reddit does.

the sub has some good ideas I play with though, we could stand to have one of our own here, I think for all things prepping.

I mean, if Obama made preppers domestic terrorists, they're doing something right.

8
james43552352345 [S] 8 points ago +8 / -0

I was reading there as well and see all the time where people go there and say it is "greedy" to keep supplies while others are hurting. Total commie BS. It is funny though because the people posting those comments are probably sitting in a freezing house in the bitter cold.

7
CelesteD 7 points ago +7 / -0

I do see the scant few "don't tell anyone about your preps" comments, and as harsh as reality is it should be followed.

The reddit hivemind is getting more retarded by the day, I swear they're recruiting stupid people on purpose, probably for more anti American terrorism or something.

4
james43552352345 [S] 4 points ago +4 / -0

I think they're mostly just sheltered young adults that don't know any better. Coddled by their parents, living in their parents house etc. Then they go to school and are brainwashed by commie BS. That's why you see so many people blaming the grid failures due to capitalism, deregulation and other shit like that. Meanwhile zero focus on personal responsibility to be prepared for a natural disaster.

The modern government run school system has created individuals that are weak mentality and lack the grit required to really be successful.

I'm convinced that the actual smart liberals simply use the democratic party for political favors and to get beneficial regulations for their industry to snuff out competition. That's why big tech, big media and so on are so heavily slanted towards democrats.

1
CuomoisaMassMurderer 1 point ago +1 / -0

5
they-see-me-trollin 5 points ago +5 / -0

it's funny how all the prepper stuff that isn't massively censored is so naturally anti-leftist... almost like everyone with any survival skills knows that the government will not save you, you will be stuck fending for yourself and your family and community, and that in absence of government, the only thing that matters is natural law... aka violence and possession.

also, prepper content tends to go 2 directions. the general rule is basically that short of being a genuine spec ops badass, you're not surviving shit going lone wolf into the woods. you will need to sleep eventually, and someone will kill you and take your shit when you inevitably do. none of those people who can pull that off are leftists. not a single damn one. for the most part, the people who will do the best are the ones who hunker down with their community, immediately establish order, protect their resources with active guards and lookouts, immediately get to work on resource accumulation, particularly food/water, and work out plumbing/garbage in a manner that's not going to attract attention from armed groups that are actively seeking to take resources. all these leftists fancy themselves as some desk jockey in the ministry of truth or ministry of culture... no fucking way they'd survive even an hour if someone told them to dig a latrine.

3
james43552352345 [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

If we get that stimmy check, definitely get one. It is wellllllllll worth the money. Get one that can run on multiple fuels. Make sure to put the generator in some place where someone can't steal it because when it gets desperate out you get all the entitled parasites coming out expecting you to help them. They hear the engine running that's how they know you have a generator. Also make sure to have it properly vented to prevent carbon monoxide.

My personal setup is that I have it in the garage and have an exhaust pipe to the outside. I put a small hole in my wall so I can run electrical cords from the garage to the inside of the house. That way if you want to conserve energy/heat you can run the cord to a specific room if needed. Works like a charm!

9
tholins 9 points ago +9 / -0

Yeah, I don’t understand it either. Like, how hard is it to store a couple flats of bottled water and some non-perishable food? I have some irritatingly severe food allergies, so I have to plan ahead for this stuff and it costs me more, but for most people, it’s pretty affordable.

Beyond that... like, go to the fucking store and get your groceries ahead of time. IDK, maybe people were still thinking food deliveries and restaurants would still be open, or something insanely dumb like that. We’ve been stuck in a stupid “pandemic” for a year. Doesn’t anybody remember the grocery runs back last March? Haven’t we all learned how to cook our own meals by now?

7
FireannDireach 7 points ago +7 / -0

It's the same everywhere. People get complacent, and liberals expect the government to hold their hands in a crisis. It's always baffled me how many people live in CA and don't have a quake kit, or non-perishables if a big enough one hits that stores close and the food supply is interrupted. It's common sense. But then I grew up in and later lived in NY, where every report of a snowstorm leads to grocery stores runs.

We just have a lot of idiots on the left side of the bell curve.

Cooking has seen an uptick with the lockdowns, but mostly based on monthly/weekly delivery plans like Blue Apron. Or the air fryer fad that replaced the slow cooker fad (both are useful, though) Most people I know over 30 can cook basic things. It's the under 30's who have no clue how to cook anything, it's like magic to them, because a lot of them were raised by single mothers who fed them fast food and junk food every meal.

6
FireannDireach 6 points ago +6 / -0

2
tholins 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, the lack of self-sufficiency and desire to be taken care of by the government is a serious problem in a survival situation. I have older friends who were NG during Katrina... everyone in New Orleans was sitting around waiting for the government to swoop in and make it all better.

I just cannot wrap my head around the concept of everything being “status quo” forever. I suppose that’s what most people think. Like, it’s fine to rely on Amazon and food deliveries and “just in time” logistics, nothing will ever happen! I can’t remember a time I felt that secure. Maybe when I was a little kid? For me, civilization has always felt tenuous.

I only use a crock pot for kielbasa and saurkraut really. Everything else it kinda messes up. Unless you have some good recipes

2
FireannDireach 2 points ago +2 / -0

Crock pot is a slightly different animal - what I'm talking about are instapots and rice cookers, that have more controls than a simple crock pot - which are great, too.

I use my rice maker for all kinds of things - rice, beans, vegetables, simple soups, stews, and steel cut oatmeal. I'm considering trying an air fryer next. A friend of mine got one and I've tried the meals she makes, it's not bad - will never be as good as a grill, but acceptable.

0
otistoole 0 points ago +1 / -1

My ex has an air fryer and its pretty neat. Im really good at cooking rice on the stove but i did like my rice cooker until my son somehow broke it.

Im sure you already know this but to anyone who has trouble cooking rice

Add a bit of extra water, like a fourth cup more than the directions say, get the water simmering, put the rice in and stir it up, cover and dont open it at all. and once the time is up, turn off the heat and leave it alone another 5 to 10 minutes. Perfect every time. If there is too much water you can always drain it out but thats better than not enough water.

GingerMan512 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm not sure that Texans, of all people, should preach to anyone about preparedness and self-reliance. They have been by far the worst prepared state for this winter storm and weren't even CLOSE to being the hardest hit by the storm itself. I used to consider Texas to be the conservative crown jewel of the US but no more
