WASP is what they called a lot of white elites from New England who were Protestants and not Catholics or Jews, and who played golf at exclusive country clubs. The Harvard and Yale types.
It's been an acronym for ages, probably used more after non-WASP European immigration (Irish, Polish, Italian) boomed.
If I had to guess, white people did not label each other as whites. It was likely done by non whites, non Christians. Jews.
Around the era of Darwin there was a lot of pseudo science. There certainly wasn't amity between European states and people's based on similar skin tone. British elites didn't consider Italians or Spaniards as peers, but as "Continentals" to be wary of. The Irish as servants, Germans as Huns, etc etc.
