I've seen vids about making a good heater out of terra cotta plant pots -- might want to look them up. Not sure of they actually work, just throwing it out there for fellow pedes who need help.
You still need a heat source for that to work. I doubt most of the suburban yuppies have firewood or fuel to heat the pots. And anyone who does have fuel doesn't need a home and garden project. They just crowd round the fireplace or stove.
