Wow. I've lived in Canada my whole life and am totally used to winter and this is crazy to me.
Even in 1998 when we had a massive ice storm that took our power out for like a week and froze everything solid (look up the 1998 Quebec/Ontario ice storm) I've never seen toilets freeze and water inside the house freeze solid.
But I guess that our houses and pipes and other infrastructure is much more insulated because we're used to the cold weather.
I have family up there, and I can't breathe in their houses. It's like they're sealed thousands of times over, not a draft to be had. No ceiling fans, either. They all think I am crazy for bringing my own box fan and throwing open the windows even in the middle of winter just so I can sleep without feeling like I'm being strangled to death. During the day I have to go out for constant walks because the lack of drafts is so suffocating. There is this one place I like to eat at when I'm visiting because I feel like there's actual airflow, and I've been told by the waiters that a Texas company designed and built the building that houses that restaurant. They say the draftiness is one of their top customer complaints.
