The minimum wage in Seattle is $16 an hour. The city councils mandate of +$4 for hazard pay pushes it to $20/hr. These grocery stores operate on tight margins. These Communist are essentially mandating food deserts.

“Unfortunately, the real minimum wage is always zero, regardless of the laws, and that is the wage that many workers receive in the wake of the creation or escalation of a government-mandated minimum wage, because they lose their jobs or fail to find jobs when they enter the labor force. Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount—and, if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed.” ― Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy

Kroger shut down a bunch of stores in San Antonio years ago when the workers tried to unionize. This is par for the course for them.

Communists hate grocery stores. They are natural enemies.

Greedy corporate move. The corporate doesn't want to loose his million dollar salary.

They never will and that's why it will cost Americans dearly.

Do you realize your statement implies 1)that they were going to have losses 2) therefore you acknowledge the salary raise is harmful to employees (no jobs) and employers (have to close) 3) that you expect the store to eat the losses and subsidize Seattle's stores with the profits from the other stores, like a good AOC-style communist that doesn't care living from other people's money until it runs out?

Do you realize that if the corporate people would get good but not super excessive salaries that there would be more than enough money within the company's profits to give a living wage to the people who actually do the majority of the work. Fire the lazy ones and pay the hard workers well And the profits would be better than they are now. To many people think that just showing up makes them deserve a pay check. So your saying that you will work for the old minimum wage? Easy to take a stand if its not you trying to survive on less than it takes to pay rent and groceries.

Fortunately I don't have to go back to making minimum wage because I invested in MYSELF. Nobody handed me shit. I didn't get raises because I Fakebooked my Twatter all day long. I didn't depend on government funded loans to get a useless degree and enter the job market with $100,000 in debt.

I worked hard, acquired solid references, entered an apprenticeship, became a journeyman electrician, went back to school, became a master electrician and now I make a decent wage that allows me to live comfortably.

Today a helper that comes in the door, 18 years old, no experience, high school diploma and still attached to momma's boob makes roughly 20% of what I make. Now there's two ways of looking at that: (1) He makes 80% less than me (2) My investment in myself has made me 80% more valuable then him I choose the later.

So let's say the minimum wage is $15 an hour. That same helper now make 42% of what I make or my employer only values me 38% more than the helper. My value just dropped 42% at no fault of my own.

How do you suppose we fix that issue? It may sound selfish to some but the cost of living is going to soar when this happens, hell it's soaring now and they're just talking about it. What happens when interest rates skyrocket and my mortgage, car payments, insurance doubles? That kid walking in the door doesn't have to worry about that stuff but he's reaping the benefits.

This isn't designed to expand the middle class, it's designed to destroy it.

Do you realize government policies and trying to control prices/access is what has hurt the population all along?

Nowanoutlaw 0 points ago +2 / -2

Yes I do. But do you realize that the government gives illegals welfare and that's why they can afford to work for less. American people don't get free money so low wages are crippling. If the government would cut off welfare these companies would have to pay more or they wouldn't be able to keep workers. Its all controlled by the government. Everything is going to plan. At least give them something. They can't compete with government handouts . The homeless population is mostly American born because of these policies. If you have a better idea please share with us.

Primary thing would be stopping government from manipulating interest rates which bids up asset/home prices making things unaffordable for middle class and poor. Also, stop immigration to reduce labor pool therefore driving up wages and innovation. Can't legislate value. Economic education is a start. But we know these things. Mandating higher wages without changing underlying value is a recipe for stagflation, especially with all the new money printed. This will hurt lower income folks hardest. Sure, and stop the welfare state, all things I agree with
