Early 2020 we had a terrible planting season. Many plots unplanted, under seeded or planted very late. Rough mid-season storms hit those same areas. Yields were projected to be far below previous year's, but export targets were not revised. We exported, more than usual even, as China is experiencing mass floods in their grain producing regions, famines were projected and they were buying at any price. Many grain producing countries are no longer exporting. The US has already sold the 2021 harvest to China. We are cutting funding to keep farms running when not profitable/coof'd up. We are paying farmers to stay fallow. Gates has a quarter million acres. We are still exporting. Our fertilizer supply is all but gone, bought from China who is not selling. No one will likely sell to us, grain or chemical fertilizers. Eat the bugs. Eat the lab meat. Soylent green is just as good as beef jerky.
The most charitable thing I can think of is he is diversifying his holdings into something that may be far more profitable in the future (food.) If money becomes less valuable and food scarcer, that's a lot of land/calories to leverage. Less charitable would be "saving the world" by either keeping it fallow (environmentalism) or trying the mega farm experiments again.
