The most charitable thing I can think of is he is diversifying his holdings into something that may be far more profitable in the future (food.) If money becomes less valuable and food scarcer, that's a lot of land/calories to leverage. Less charitable would be "saving the world" by either keeping it fallow (environmentalism) or trying the mega farm experiments again.
What is Gates doing with all that land? Is he growing and selling to foreign countries?
