I homeschool my kids. They still control the curriculum you have to teach, and they test on it. The good thing is I control the narrative of the bullshit. For instance, when studying aviation, they taught my kid about the wright brothers for two days, and then spent the next month sending material and testing about bessie coleman exclusively, a black pilot of zero importance to aviation. It's really easy to pose exploratory questions like "if you had to pick what was more important, pioneering aviation like the wright brothers, or saving up enough money to go to flight school like bessie coleman, which to you think had the bigger impact on the world?" Just cut through their shit.

I don’t know about other states, but I have complete control over my curriculum in TX. I don’t have to report to anyone. You can check HSLDA.org for info on each state

yeah, I'm also in texas and the texas board of education has complete control over the curriculum, and STAR testing is statewide and mandatory.
