As a gen X'er, it is surreal that Eastern Europe is now the defender of individual liberty. When I was a little kid, they were behind the "Iron Curtain".
(Which is precisely why they're not falling for the same old Marxist bullshit now)
We wish it were true. It is far worse here than you think. On the surface it looks that we are the real paragons of justice and liberty but in practice we are getting fucked over by our government much more than you do if you can believe it. The funniest thing is that most Americans think that we got rid of the communists here but that is not true, vast majority of communist politicians stayed in power by renaming their party from Communist to Socialist or something similar.
As it said in the headline they know the value of free speech because there are people alive who remember not having it. Contrast that with the entitled folks who live in this country today, who literally can't entertain the idea of someone using the threat of violence to shut them up.
